What is the best first shotgun?
A 12 or 20 gauge pump. Pumps are reliable, affordable and run almost any shell, which makes them a great way to learn.

12 gauge or 20 gauge?
12 gauge has more shell choices and more power. 20 gauge is lighter and kicks less, which makes it a favorite for smaller shooters, upland hunting and long days at the range.
What does the choke do?
The choke is the constriction at the end of the barrel that controls how tight the pattern stays. Tighter chokes reach farther; open chokes spread faster for close targets. Details are in Shotgun Accessories.
Can I shoot 3-inch shells in my shotgun?
Only if the barrel is marked for them. Shells can be shorter than the chamber, never longer. Check the barrel stamp every time.
Is a shotgun good for home defense?
Many shooters think so. It is simple to run and effective at close range. Pick a load suited to your home, practice with it, and know your local laws.
How much recoil should I expect?
It depends on the gun weight, the gauge and the load. A heavier gun, a gas-operated semi-auto, a good recoil pad and light target loads all make shooting more comfortable.
