Every shotgun action loads, fires and ejects shells a little differently. Here is how they compare.

Pump action
Rack it, shoot it, rack it again. Pumps are tough, affordable and run light and heavy loads alike. A top pick for a first shotgun, home defense and all-around use.
Semi-automatic
Gas or inertia systems cycle the next shell for you. Gas guns soften recoil, which makes them popular for waterfowl, clays and competition. Expect to pay more and keep them clean.
Over-under
Two barrels stacked one on top of the other. Fast second shots, often with two different chokes, and a single sighting plane. The classic clay-target gun.

Side-by-side
Two barrels next to each other. Light, quick and full of tradition, especially in the upland bird field and cowboy action shooting.
Single shot
One barrel, one shell, simple and inexpensive. A great starter gun and a handy truck or farm gun.
Lever and bolt action
Less common but fun. Lever-action shotguns are popular with cowboy and collector crowds; bolt-action shotguns are often dedicated slug guns.
